Barrier Sprays of Bifenthrin
Provides 3-4 months of control of adults that make contact with treated areas of bark. Should be applied twice annually in spring and summer. People can purchase and apply this by following the links and directions below (highlighted words are links to purchase sites). Start at the ground and treat up to 5 feet above ground level. Make sure to get ALL the nooks and crannies as red turpentine beetle will crawl underneath bark flaps to get into the tree.
- Baseline® (one quart makes 100 gallons of material)
Note: This is an insecticide. If used incorrectly and against label instructions this pesticide has been reported to be dangerous to bees. Pyrethroids are great tools for responsible hands. Not unlike a wrench or a hammer, which if used incorrectly could also kill bees.
Precision Tree Experts can perform these applications for you for $5 per tree in most cases. Minimum site visit fees vary by location.
Disrupting Pheromone Treatments of Verbenone
The product we use is an environmentally friendly repellent that provides sustained and controlled release of the verbenone anti-aggregation pheromone. Verbenone is naturally produced by pine bark beetles and by several other species of bark beetle towards the end of a mass attack. The presence of verbenone signals new pine bark beetles approaching the infested tree that it is already too overcrowded to serve as a suitable host. By applying verbenone to a healthy and uninfested tree, host-seeking pine bark beetles will identify a tree as an undesirable host and leave it unharmed. Field studies have shown verbenone to be highly repellent of pine bark beetles on both single-tree and small stand levels. Verbenone is an outstanding alternative to standard pine bark beetles treatments, due to its high-level of control, long field life, and simple application methods.
